Safety notes

ShellExView is a small utility. If the file is megabytes large or comes as an .exe installer from a non-NirSoft domain, treat it as untrusted.
How to use it (5-minute fix)
1. Extract and elevate
- Extract the ZIP to a folder you control.
- Right-click
shexview.exe→ Run as administrator. - Without elevation, disable actions may fail silently.
2. Hide Microsoft extensions
- Open Options → Hide All Microsoft Extensions.
- You should see mostly third-party rows. Pink highlighting often means an unsigned or hard-to-verify DLL, useful when hunting junkware.
3. Binary-search a crash or lag
- Sort or filter to Context Menu (and Icon Overlay if folders feel slow).
- Select half of the non-Microsoft items → F7 (Disable).
- Options → Restart Explorer (or
Ctrl+E). - Test right-click. If the problem is gone, the culprit is in the disabled half, re-enable half of those and repeat. If it remains, the culprit is still enabled.
- Leave the bad handler disabled, then update or uninstall the parent app.
4. Everyday cleanup
Disable menus you never use (GPU desktop entries, “upload to…”, unused archive tools). Re-enable with F8 if something you need disappears.

Windows 11 caveat
Windows 11 shows a short modern menu first. Many classic handlers live under Show more options (Shift+F10). Disabling them in ShellExView still stops those DLLs from loading into Explorer, which often fixes lag even when the modern menu looks “empty.”
Want the legacy menu always: Restore classic context menu, know that more legacy handlers may load afterward.

Is ShellExView safe to download?
Yes when you use the official NirSoft ZIP. Avoid third-party installers.
Do I need the 64-bit version?
On 64-bit Windows, yes. Use Options → Show 32-bit Shell Extensions when hunting 32-bit-only handlers.
Will disabling an extension uninstall the app?
No. It only disables the shell hook. The app usually still runs.
Does it work on Windows 11?
